Daniel Austin.
Daniel Austin became an Ambassador for Brighter Futures in March 2015 just after the first production of the Brighter Futures Theatre Company. The Company has now written and produced four shows and is working on its fifth:
- What are we going to do with all our children! (2015)
- I’d Rather Not Know! (2016)
- Conference of the mermaids (2018)
- No place like (2019)
- There’s something happening (2021)
The original Company started with 16 women from Brighter Futures who wrote the play themselves – and continue to do so – with 13 of them finally performing the piece to a sell out audience. The stories told are the autobiographical and imaginative interpretations of its members’ experiences, thought processes and ideas. They also focus on the use of three of the fundamental principles of theatre and storytelling: communication, concentration and commitment.
Daniel has been the Director at Jersey Arts Centre since 2001 having spent the previous two years as the Artistic Director of The Castle, Wellingborough, in Northamptonshire.
He has directed 90+ plays, written 7 and co-created numerous others with Jersey Arts Centre youth theatre, the Junior Drama Group and with the Brighter Futures ladies. He has also directed a number of al fresco and site sensitive productions – a couple of which have been with Samarès Players here in Jersey. He has been working with Brighter Futures since January 2014 and loves the Company: ‘everyone is so friendly, honest, open and creative’!
He trained at the Roehampton Institute – Whitelands College – in English and Drama (graduating in 1988); the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Acting (1989); and the University of Reading (2000) where he studied The Body and Representation.
